The eruption of the Red Mountain in 4E 5 opened a window of opportunity, cutting the Imperial Legion off from Morrowind and preventing the Empire from aiding the Dark Elves. A militant Argonian faction known as the An-Xileel formed, hoping to finally fight back against the Argonians’ Dunmer oppressors. The newly organized Argonians didn’t disperse once Merhunes Dagon has been defeated in the Imperial City. The Argonians not only organized but began charging through Oblivion Gates, putting up a resistance so impressive that the province avoided the worst of the Oblivion Crisis and the Daedra were forced to close their gates to stop the Deadlands from being overrun. Harsh reprisals ensued, and in the Arnesian War of 3E 396 the Dunmer took over large parts of Black Marsh in their retaliatory push.ĭuring the Oblivion Crisis, the Hist – the sentient trees of Black Marsh – called upon Tamriel’s Argonians to return to their homeland and fight the forces of Mehrunes Dagon. It began when House Dres’ slaves overthrew their masters. At the same time, Bethesda laid out some huge developments in the south of the province.ģ7 years before the Oblivion Crisis, a revolt broke out among southern Morrowind’s Argonian slaves. Between Oblivion and Skyrim the eruption of Vvardenfell’s Red Mountain saw the island all but destroyed. The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind took place in the eastern Dunmer province, but only on the island of Vvardenfell. Today we’re going to dive the lore connecting Oblivion and Skyrim. While some mega-fans might seek these connections, not all of them are so easy to find or will even make sense when taken alone. That’s kind of amazing considering the gap in time and the fact we’ve gone from traditional medieval fantasy to the frigid Nordic lands more akin to the Beowulf legends. Many of the challenges and crucial moments caused by the Oblivion Crisis directly lead to the world we find in Skyrim two centuries later.
You really can jump into Skyrim fresh without an inkling of confusion ( Oblivion is pretty great, though).Īll this isn’t to say the games are disconnected. Because each entry in the series is largely self-contained, every title serves as an excellent opportunity for the uninitiated to give the games a shot. Many of us fell in love with The Elder Scrolls series through either Oblivion (2006) or Skyrim (2011).
